Ghais Khaleghi wins the 2023 Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge

The Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports came down to this: 1000 horsepower versus less than 1000 pounds of weight. Steve Luca brought the former, with a 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. Ghais Khaleghi came with the latter with a Stohr prototype.

Luca set a blazing lap time of 2:02.759 around NCM Motorsports Park. That broke the production car record at the facility, a 2:02.860 lap set in 2020 by Andy Pilgrim in a McLaren Senna.

However, Khaleghi’s car, with a Suzuki 1000 engine putting out around 175 horsepower, went even faster, with a 2:00.091 lap.

The battle for first may have captured the spotlight, but that was just the tip of the iceberg of the battles during our annual Ultimate Track Car Challenge. Fastest FWD? Fastest AWD? Fastest car on 200tw tires? Read on for the complete list of award winners.

Try Your Luck Against a New BMW M3

Sure, the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports attracts all sorts of wild builds, but that doesn’t mean more stock hardware can’t be competitive, too.

Meet Kyle Carrick’s 2021 BMW M3 Competition. Aside from an aftermarket intake and exhaust plus a set of grippy Hoosier tires, the car is entirely stock.

It’s not every day you get to compete against a NASCAR Cup car, so imagine how excited many of us were to see a Hendrick Performance-built NASCAR Cup Series Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 enter to compete in the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports last year.

LS-Powered Heavyweight VS. All-Wheel-Drive Lightweight

LS-Powered Heavyweight VS. All-Wheel-Drive Lightweight

How do you prefer your track machine? A heavy hitter with a powerful engine or something nimbler and more lightweight?

This week’s selected entries to the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports feature both, in the form of an LS-powered Infinti G35 and an early JDM Mitsubishi Evo.

Can you beat BimmerWorld’s 1000-horsepower Bergsteiger?

Can you beat BimmerWorld’s 1000-horsepower Bergsteiger?

What does it take to build a competitive car for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb?

If you're BimmerWorld, you start with an E36 M3 and then go wild with 1000 horsepower, 12-inch-wide wheels, a fully custom pushrod suspension and a modified IMSA carbon-fiber body–all in a package that weighs only 2500 pounds with driver.

Oh, and did we mention this machine, better known as the Bergsteiger, is competing in the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports?

Prototypes, High-Power Machines and More | Meet the Entries So Far

Think you have the fastest machine on four wheels? The Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports is the place to prove it.

Even though it’s over a month away, we already have 11 entries ready to battle it out for the title of Ultimate Track Car.

Need some inspiration? Here’s just a handful of examples of what you could be competing against:

Corvette or Shelby? Two Takes on Modified American Muscle Enter the Ultimate Track Car Challenge

Comparing a C6 Corvette Z06 to a S550 Mustang GT350 might be like comparing apples to oranges, but consider this: Both pack some serious American muscle from the factory and both are represented in our growing field for the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports.

In one corner is Brian Collins’ 2017 Ford Mustang GT350 (lead photo). Instead of going for a more powerful engine, Brian simply found a way to force in more air via a larger Whipple supercharger. In total, the Mustang is good for 798 horsepower.

In the other corner, we have Tracy Gaudu’s 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The standout modification on the list? A built LS7 powerplant from Lingenfelter that puts down a healthy 550 horsepower. Other mods include a front splitter, rear wing, adjustable shocks and–new for this year–bigger brakes.

View these cars, along with the rest of the field, on the accepted entries page.

If you think you have what it takes to win, enter your car here.

The 2022 UTCC returns to Virginia International Raceway May 13-14 in the center of NASA’s HyperFest weekend.

The Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge is presented by Grassroots Motorsports in association with Wilwood Engineering, CRC Industries, DeatschWerks, HP Tuners, SPA Technique and Volkswagen, with trophies from BimmerWorld, XS Power Batteries, Sensor Connection, Track Advantage and Stifflers.

Can a Fox Body Beat a Modern Mustang – And the Electric Future?

Is the latest and greatest track machine always destined to win? Or do proven, old-school rides have an advantage over newer tech?

One Fox-body Mustang aims to find out in the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports by not only competing against a newer version of itself–an S550. And can it outrun an EV?

Prototype Racers: No Longer Just for Endurance Racing

Prototype Racers: No Longer Just for Endurance Racing

What do top-tier endurance racing and the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports have in common? Both feature some slick-looking prototype-style track machines.

2021 saw Clayton Eley take the top spot in a 2018 Ligier JS P3, but does that mean a similar machine will win for 2022? The entrants of these three track cars certainly hope to:

Three Different Flavors of 500+ Horsepower Track Machines

Trying to build the ultimate track machine? What’s your go-to setup: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive?

As it turns out, there’s no wrong answer, as our first round of entries to the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports features all three setups.
